Why The Extended Warranty Consumer Issue Will Not Go Away, And How To Handle It

The extended warranty is a consumer issue which continues to be shrouded in controversy. Although it is taken for granted by many that an expense as great as a car needs to be covered by insurance, there are those who point to the inherent risk of dealing with companies who are looking to find any excuse not to pay out, and claim that you are better off to manage your own risk over time. Certainly, it is not the cut and dried case the insurance industry want us to believe it is. It is very much a matter for each individual motorist to decide on their own terms.

One of the primary considerations is to make sure that you have the best deal possible when you buy your vehicle in the first place. Traditionally, vehicles have been protected by one or three year guarantees. Now, there are manufacturers who offer five year guarantees as standard. These should be seriously considered, as the prices have not risen as a result to the degree which would have been expected. If you can have a couple of extra years where you do not have to worry about trying to find a reliable third party insurer, why not take advantage of them?

The only downside of this extended manufacturer's warranty is that is must by its very nature be limited to a degree. As five years is a very long time, and a lot can happen to a vehicle, it is obviously necessary for the manufacturer to insist that the vehicle is properly cared for. To do this, you will need to carry out the servicing instructions which come with the policy, and then make sure that you keep written evidence that you have done so. In this way, even the manufacturer's warranty has some of the bad characteristics of the third party deals, but it is only this which prevents people who do not look after their vehicles properly from forcing the premiums up for everyone else.

The extended warranty typically offered by a dealer does come with strings attached. It is important to realize at the very start that the dealer is not, and can never be, an unbiased giver of opinion. The dealer will be being paid a commission on the insurance which you take out. This does not mean that the dealer cannot be genuine and helpful, much less that he is trying to sell you something against your better interests, but it does inevitably mean that impartiality can never be fully present.

You should always compare any insurance cover you are offered by your dealer with that offered by a third party. If your dealer is someone you know and trust, then that will weigh in his favor. The independent insurer will have to be thoroughly checked out to make sure that they are reliable. The Internet has now given us a lot more ability to share our experiences with other consumers, and to provide our own feedback. We need to make sure that we are using this resource. It can help us find the most suitable extended warranty for any given consumer.
